An Emissions/Removals Balance Offset Through Proprietary Environmental Projects

The Brazzale Group has achieved carbon neutrality* through a model based on emissions measurement, efficiency investments, and offsetting through proprietary environmental projects. The Brazzale Forest logo on the group’s product packaging signals this achievement to consumers, while the accompanying QR code provides deeper insight into how neutrality* was reached.

This result was made possible by the Ouro Branco Silvipastoril agricultural and forestry project in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, where pasture-based livestock farming is integrated with tree planting in a silvopastoral management model on company-owned land.

Carbon capture occurs through the most natural process: photosynthesis. Trees absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere and transform it into plant and wood biomass, helping to absorb the group’s emissions.

The Silvopastoral Model

In the Ouro Branco Silvipastoril project, pastures are integrated with rows of trees: 1.5 million eucalyptus trees create an environment where livestock farming, shade, forage production, and biodiversity coexist within the same agricultural system.

This model achieves multiple outcomes simultaneously: improving animal welfare, increasing biodiversity, enhancing land value, eliminating fertilization, reducing pressure on agricultural land, and contributing to carbon capture through tree growth.

Emissions and Removals

The Brazzale Group’s emissions/removals balance* compares the emissions generated by business activities with the carbon removals achieved through proprietary environmental projects.

According to the GHG inventory verified by DNV GL for the year 2022, the group’s total emissions stand at 42,633.60 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year, of which 9,652.55 tonnes are of biogenic origin and 32,981.05 tonnes are of fossil origin.

Total removals equal 50,035.73 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year, entirely of biogenic origin.

The balance is therefore offset, with removals exceeding reported emissions by 7,402.13 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year.

Doing Things Where They Work Best

Carbon neutrality* is part of the path initiated by the Brazzale Group in 2000, founded on the principle of “doing things where they work best.”

In the Czech Republic, with the Gran Moravia Eco-Sustainable Supply Chain, Brazzale developed an agricultural and production system of over 80 farms spanning 90,000 hectares in a region climate-suited for dairy farming. In Brazil, through the Ouro Branco Silvipastoril project, it integrated livestock farming with pasture reforestation. In Italy, the group retains management, research, aging, packaging, logistics, product development, and technical-administrative control over international processes.

This model makes it possible to combine production growth, raw material quality, efficiency, and environmental responsibility, without pitting development against impact reduction.

*Note on Scope
Carbon neutrality refers to the Brazzale Group and not to individual products. CO₂ emissions within the Brazzale scope – from milk collection to delivery to the customer – are balanced through carbon removals from company-owned forests.
