An emissions balance offset through company-owned environmental projects
The Brazzale Group has achieved carbon neutrality through a model based on measuring emissions, investing in efficiency, and offsetting through company-owned environmental projects. The Carbon Neutral Group logo, displayed on the packaging of the Group’s products, communicates this achievement to consumers; the accompanying QR code provides further information on how carbon neutrality was achieved.
This result was made possible by the Ouro Branco Silvipastoril agricultural and forestry project, developed in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, where pasture-based livestock farming is integrated with tree planting in a silvopastoral model for managing the Group’s own land.
Carbon capture takes place through the most natural of processes: photosynthesis. Trees absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere and convert it into plant and woody biomass, helping to offset the Group’s emissions balance.
The silvopastoral model
In the Ouro Branco Silvipastoril project, pastures are integrated with rows of trees: approximately 2 million eucalyptus trees, equivalent to around xxx trees per head of livestock, creating an environment where livestock farming, shade, forage production, and biodiversity coexist within the same agricultural system.
This model delivers several benefits simultaneously: improving animal welfare, increasing biodiversity, enhancing the value of the land, eliminating the need for fertilisation, reducing pressure on agricultural land, and contributing to carbon capture through tree growth.
Emissions and removals
The Brazzale Group’s emissions balance compares emissions generated by its business activities with carbon removals achieved through company-owned environmental projects.
According to the GHG inventory verified by DNV GL for 2022 (TO BE UPDATED), the Group’s total emissions amount to 42,633.60 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year, of which 9,652.55 tonnes are of biogenic origin and 32,981.05 tonnes are of fossil origin.
Total removals amount to 50,035.73 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year, entirely of biogenic origin.
The balance is therefore offset, with removals exceeding reported emissions by 7,402.13 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year.
Doing things where they are done best
Carbon neutrality is part of the journey started by the Brazzale Group in 2000, based on the principle of “doing things where they are done best.”
In the Czech Republic, with the Gran Moravia Eco-sustainable Chain, Brazzale has developed an agricultural and production system of over 80 farms across 90,000 hectares, in a territory climatically suited for dairy farming. In Brazil, with the Ouro Branco Silvipastoril project, it has integrated livestock farming and pasture reforestation. In Italy, the group maintains management, research, aging, packaging, logistics, product development, and technical-administrative control of international processes.
This model allows for the combination of production growth, raw material quality, efficiency, and environmental responsibility, without setting development and impact reduction against each other.
